Temperatures in Newcastle peaked at 24C which melted the tarmac in the appropriately named suburb of Heaton, leading to a man putting his foot straight through the road.
The 24-year-old was walking down an alleyway on his way for a late breakfast when he stepped on a soft stretch of road surface.
To his horror, his left leg went straight through the melted surface, trapping him up to his thigh, and firefighters had to chip away at the road with a hammer and chisel to free him.
His rescuers said he could easily have broken his ankle had he not been wearing his granddad's Dr Marten boots.
