Vanuatu is now a signatory to a joint declaration on an initiative called One Tree, One Day, One Life for the Pacific Region.
The project is initiated by the Government of New Caledonia and is all about planting more trees in every Pacific Island countries to combat the global climate change caused by the green house effect.
The Minister for the Sector of the Economy and Foreign Trade in the Government of New Caledonia, Anthony Lecren, is touring the Pacific Island States seeking the Governments of the Pacific region to sign the declaration and be part of the One Tree, One Day, One Life Project.
The Minister for Lands and Energy Steven Kalsakau signed the Declaration on Monday committing the Vanuatu Government and the people of Vanuatu to the initiative that will run for the next ten years. He signed the Joint Declaration with the French territory Minister of the sector for the Economy and Foreign Trade Anthony Lecren, witnessed by the officials from the Ministry of Lands and Agriculture.
The Declaration states that the Pacific Island countries unite around the Programme of One Tree, One Day, One Life consisting in planting as many trees as the people itself of every Pacific Island countries each year in each country, state or territory in the Pacific;harmonies policies and actions of sustainable development in countries, states or territories in the Pacific in accordance with the institutional framework recommended by RIO+20; allow this programme to become the environmental and sustainable development showcase of the Pacific countries and territories during the Summit of RIO+20; Develop an action of communication on the international scale around this programme and sustain this project over a period of ten years minimum.
In his remarks during the signing ceremony of the Declaration on the initiative of the One Tree, One Day, One life initiative, Vanuatu Lands Minister Steven Kalsakau assured the French territory minister, Anthony Lecrene, that Vanuatu believes in such joint effort with other Pacific neighbours and more particularly the initiative that will reduce and protect the Pacific Island countries from the global climate change and its environmental impact on the lives of the Pacific population.
He expressed his appreciation for the initiative taken by New Caledonia and joined the French Territorial Government Minister in calling upon all other Pacific countries and territories to sign the declaration for the good of the entire population of the Pacific.
In response the French Territory Minister for the Sector of the Economy and Foreign Trade Anthony Lecren thanked the Vanuatu Lands Minister and the Vanuatu Government and the People of Vanuatu for recognising the importance of the initiative and the support to the declaration.
“We need to develop an initiative called the Green Economy Programme for the Pacific which will carry the project One Tree, One Day, One Life across the region and enhance the visibility of Pacific Islands environmental issues through the media and the international community and encourage all the Pacific States to ratify or adhere to international commitments on biodiversity,” Minister Lecren stated.
“ In the light of our endorsement, this entails a united stance in collaboration with other small Pacific Island State and Territories the outmost support in this very important and worthy regional initiative ,” Vanuatu Lands Minister remarked as he signed the Joint Declaration of the initiative of One Tree, One Day, One Life project for the Pacific Island States and Territories.
Once in every year, each person in each and every states and territories will plant one tree and continue every year for the next ten years.
